From new songs to live shows, Mehak and Mallica have a lot going for them
Passion for singing is a constant in the journey of sister duo, Mehak and Mallica Malhotra, from when they first dreamt of becoming singers, to now, when they are gearing up to launch new songs amidst a host of live shows.
Mehak, who has lent her voice to pop songs such as 24 Carat, and Shit About Love, will soon drop a new single, Hey You. Her live singing, however, is “more of Sufi rock”, says the performer, who enjoys stage acts. She says, “When you are singing for a live audience, you get an instant response. While recording [songs], you don’t know whether people will accept your song or not.”
Mallica, who is set to release her next song, Pinch, also loves performing live. She focuses on putting up an energetic show. “I’m the only female singer in the country who has come up with this concept called Passion Mallica. It’s a solo act with my dancers, and we put up an LED interactive act where we create illusions. It’s an international concept,” she says with pride.
How did both sisters — Delhi girls who have been living in Mumbai for many years now — end up being a part of the same industry? In Mehak’s case, it was a stroke of luck. “I used to sing at events since school days. This one time, I was a DJ at an event and someone from the event management company asked me, ‘You sing so well. Why don’t you do it professionally?’ I was hesitant. And then later, they gave me a chance… I did a gig for them,” she recalls.
For Mallica, whose first song was a fusion of Closer by the Chainsmokers and Chandni Raatein, their dad was an inspiration. “He’d sing very well and inspired us. Mehak used to do riyaaz and he encouraged me, too, to do the same,” she says.
Do the sisters perform together? Oh yes, but at a select few events. And how do they keep sibling rivalry away? “It has never happened. We are uniquely different in our zones and it gets even better when we perform together. Where I lack, she helps me, and vice versa. As sisters, that comes naturally,” says Mallica.
