Her portrayal of Zoya in TV show Qubool Hain made Surbhi Jyoti a household name. However, the actor reveals that she never wanted to become an actor in the first place. In fact, Surbhi was about to start a PhD when she got a few acting opportunities, that she took up just to find out how things work.

“While growing up, the only thing I used to do was study. I also did theatre, but becoming an actor was never on my agenda,” says Surbhi, who holds two Master’s degrees, in Public Administration and English literature. And, her aim in life was in line with her qualifications. “I wanted to start my PhD and was thinking of becoming a lecturer. Around that time I also got offers from Punjabi shows but still never thought of taking it up as a profession. Gul [Khan; writer, director and producer] saw my pictures and liked them. It was then that I got a call for a small audition and a mock shoot for Qubool Hain. And the next thing I know was that I got selected and started shooting for it. Since then, there has been no looking back,” adds the actor, who has been a part of two Punjabi shows, Akhiyaan To Door Jayen Na and Kach Diyan Wanga.

Surbhi is indebted to Gul for the opportunity she got. “She conceived Zoya and gave me the opportunity to live the character on screen. Zoya had a mind of her own, her style statement also grabbed attention. Playing the character was a liberating experience,” adds Surbhi, who is currently a part of a fantasy fiction.
