Beats of the dhol and tabla, and the sublime sound of the flute blended with Punjabi folk and Sufi hits, as the Delhi-based rock band Nasya brought the house down last Friday, at the fourth week of Hindustan Times DLF Cyber Hub Friday Jam Season 5, powered by Too Yumm and Nearbuy.com.

The band’s frontman Kunal Wason fired up the crowd right away, starting the show with the song Uddaa Punjab. Addressing the crowd, he said, “Thank you HT, for having us back again. Jitne bhi log yahan kaam karte hain, hum log unke liye taali bajate hai, tum log kaise kaam kar lete ho. Hats off to you guys.” Then he threw a question at the audience — how many present there were Punjabis? As the hands went up, the musician told the elated crowd, “Yahan to Punjab hi bana hua hain.”

The mood set, Nasya started belting out the hits. Known for experimenting and infusing Hindustani vocals with the Western elements of jazz, blues and rock, the band gave a rocking spin to hits after hits — Kismat, Yaar Anmulle, Ki Banu Duniya Da, Ikk Kudi, Wangan Charha Lo, Mitran Di Chatri, bringing a taste of Punjab to the Delhi-NCR crowd. “My family is connected to Punjab, and Punjabi comes naturally to me,” said Kunal. About being back here, he said, “HT Friday Jam Season 5 is as entertaining as Season 1. The crowd here was amazing. Seeing people cheer, shout, hoot and sing along with us, gives me such energy.”

To any band that hopes to make it big, the singer’s advice was, “The future of independent music is still bright. If you have a passion for music, keep at it, and make your passion a career.”

Friday Jam is great for enjoying music, chilling out and having a good time. I also came for Guru Randhawa’s gig.
