FOR THE LOVE OF TREES

- Naina Arora

M eanwhile, responding to the plan of cutting 17,000 trees in Delhi to make way for government officers’ houses and a commercial complex, Jaaved says, “Delhi is one of the most polluted cities in the world. But the point is, these babus can live in Gurgaon, Noida, or outside the city. Delhiites are facing the wrath of the pollution problem. Children’s health is extremely on edge. The government says we’ll plant 10 more trees. But 10 more will grow in about 20-30 years. So what happens during that period? It doesn’t work practically. It’s the people’s responsibility to be conscious about using resources, while the government’s responsibility is to make infrastructure friendly to the environment and people; it goes hand in hand.”

The actor had recently tweeted, too, saying, “With all the blame game being played in Delhi over the proposed cutting of 17,000+ trees, the final sufferer will be the planet and its children. Instead of cutting down trees for accommodation, why not accommodate in Noida or Gurgaon where people are anyway commuting from ??? (sic).”

However, the High Court says that no more trees are to be cut till July 4.
