Understanding hair loss in women
Research says that less than 45% of women have a full head of hair through out their life. And, diagnosis of female hair loss can be made by hair experts, which is needed for correct treatment.
The most common cause of hair loss in women is genetics that is characterised by widening of the central hairline and decrease in hair density over the crown area and frontal scalp with retention of frontal hairline. Diffused hair loss affecting the entire scalp is another cause which can be due to decreased hemoglobin levels, altered thyroid levels, nutritional deficiencies or increased stress levels.
Diagnosis can be confirmed by dermatoscope/proscope analysis, gene test and blood tests, respectively. If a patient presents a genetic pattern of hair loss, the apt treatment plan would be application of medications with in-house clinical procedures and hair transplant. And, if hair loss is due to nutritional deficiency or altered hormonal levels, treatment is focused on correcting the deficiencies.
In-house treatments include collagen induction therapy, low level laser therapy, growth factor injections and platelet rich plasma. All these treatments require multiple treatment sessions over a period of six months. Rigenera Activa is a new FDA approved stem cell treatment which gives similar results in just one session. Hair transplant is another revolutionary treatment for women with excessive hair loss. Cosmetic camouflage hair products and hair replacement patches are also popular options. Hair loss in women is still an underrecognised entity. Genetic pattern of hair loss can be progressive without treatment. Psychological effects of hair loss are immense and early diagnosis and treatment are a must. The author, Dr Anupriya Goel, is the Medical Director
