GOT LEADS THE PACK AT EMMY NOMINATION­S

TThe nomination­s for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced with hit fantasy show Game of Thrones making a comeback and securing a total of 22 nods.

The nomination­s, which were announced by The Handmaid’s Tale star Samira Wiley and The Blacklist actor Ryan Eggold, also saw actor Sandra Oh securing her maiden nomination in the lead actor category in a drama series for her role in Killing Eve. She became the first actor of Asian descent to earn a nomination for lead actor.

Oh, who plays an MI5 spy in Killing Eve, has been nominated for Emmy five times before. She will be joined by Claire Foy (The Crown), Tatiana Maslaney (Orphan Black), Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), Keri Russell (The Americans) and Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld).

Wood’s Westworld co-stars, Ed Harris and Jeffrey Wright, have been nominated in the lead actor in a drama series category. They face tough competitio­n from the last time winner Sterling K Brown, who has picked up another nod for This Is Us. Nominees in the drama series category include The Handmaid’s Tale, Game of Thrones; This Is Us, The Crown, The Americans, Stranger Things and Westworld. Game of Thrones was closely followed by the Westworld with 21 nomination­s. Saturday Night Live also got 21 nods. The Handmaid’s Tale, which won the award for best drama series last year, stood third with 20 nomination­s, while The Assassinat­ion of Gianni Versace was fourth with 18 nomination­s. GoT stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage and Diana Rigg, have all picked up nods for the show. More than one month after his death, the late chef and TV personalit­y Anthony Bourdain has been honoured with two Emmy nomination­s.

Bourdain’s show Parts Unknown earned six nomination­s overall while its digital extension Explore Parts Unknown also picked up a nod. In the comedy stakes, it is nomination galore for the second season of Donald Glover’s Atlanta, GLOW and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, which sees actor Rachel Brosnahan go up against Pamela Adlon (Better Things), Allison Janney (Mom) and Issa Rae of Insecure fame.

The awards will be held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 17 and will be hosted by stand up comics Colin Jost and Michael Che. PTI
