Will she? Won’t she? Hina Khan on playing Komolika
Actor Hina Khan has been creating a strong buzz ever since her name came up for the iconic Komolika character — originally played by Urvashi Dholakia — in Ekta Kapoor’s reboot version of Kasautii Zindagii Kay. While speculation continues, HT speaks to Hina and this is what she has to say: “I won’t say it’s not happening, but I suggest let’s wait for the official announcement. Yes, I did meet Ekta and somehow people started to speculate, and it came to a point where they even confirmed that I’ve been roped in for the show, whereas I’m yet to sign anything... Let the [show’s] makers make the final announcement.”
Speaking to us while promoting her new music video, Bhasoodi, Hina says that she didn’t even know what she had been called for, and “it was only after Ekta said so, I realised it was for Komolika’s role”.
Kasautii Zindagii Kay had a very successful run from 2001 to 2008. Asked if the reboot will have Komolika’s signature step twirling her hair, Hina almost gives out, “No, that’s not going to be there and if at all it’s going to happen, it’s definitely going to be different. You see, it’s a reboot, so it can’t be the same.”
The actor says that she has always been a fan of the show and, in particular, Urvashi’s character. “I’ve followed Kasautii… regularly. And I’ve loved the characters: Prerna, Anurag, Rishabh Bajaj and, of course, Komolika — [the actors] all nailed it with their performances,” she says.
Hina adds, “Urvashi is a fabulous actor. Honestly, when I’d see her on-screen, I never thought I want to play this character. At that time, I wanted to be a journalist.”
Hina made her TV debut with the show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and was on it for eight years. She later was on Khatron Ke Khiladi and Bigg Boss. On the future, the actor says, “Whatever show I pick up, I’ll do other things, too, not just a daily soap. I’ve realised that people have accepted me in this new avatar also.”
