VEGETARIANS CAN HAVE MUSCULAR BODY

Trainers from Suniel ki Sena debunk myths about bigger muscles and the diet required to achieve that physique

Do you, too, yearn for a chiseled body and sixpack abs? Well, the next time you spot anyone with that frame, think about building up your stamina first. And, to understand why and how to achieve this, join Mission Fit India — an initiative by Fever FM and My FM — that has reached its fifth week, with Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty and Yoga guru Baba Ramdev guiding the radio listeners.

Actor Suniel Shetty’s team of trainers aka Suniel ki Sena throws some light on the common myths that people often have about bodybuilders. For instance, we often think that if someone has bigger muscles, it means he or she is fitter and stronger. But, “that’s not true”.

Crossfit trainer, Shivoham, explains, “If you see powerlifters or weightlifters, some of them might look big genetically, but some of them don’t look that big. Also, the girls who have won in our Commonwealth [Games], and have 45-50 kilos of bodyweight, are lifting almost two to three times their bodyweight. But, they are not big. And, at the same time, there are bodybuilders who pose on the stage, are humongous, but they can’t lift the same proportion of weight. So, strength and muscle size are very different.”

Looking at the bulked-up physiques of bodybuilders, one often thinks about their intense dietary plans. And to some it may come as a surprise to know that a muscular body is achievable with even a vegetarian diet! Miihier Singh, a professional bodybuilder, says vegetarians can have an impressive body, too.

Singh adds, “When you see a person who has never had non-vegetarian food ever in his life, there’s no way that he wouldn’t be able to build a sixpack. Everybody can achieve their goal according to what they want to put in their body, and what their purpose in life is. I can’t say to everybody who meets me, ‘Why don’t you have a six pack, because I have one?’ Because, it has to all depend on his lifestyle, and his purpose. There’s no one thing that’s right. I have had friends who are fitter than me, and they don’t have a six pack. Their purpose is about making sure that they are functional, and they work all day and night to pay their bills.”

But, one thing that is a must to be able to achieve a fit body, is to follow a proper diet or training. And, if you are in the league of those who complain about lack of time to become fit, then hear out nutrition consultant Shweta Bhatia, who believes in living an exemplary life.

“I strongly believe in practising what I preach. If I’m telling you to control cravings, avoid temptations, exercise even in a busy schedule, then am I able to do it? To tell you the truth, I have a practice in three cities in India — Goa, Pune and Mumbai, and I keep travelling every five or six days. In spite of this, I maintain a decent training program, and train for four days a week — out of which one is a serious cardio training high-intensity interval, and the other three are my weighttraining days. And, I maintain this no matter what. If I’m putting in all my efforts to do this, despite my busy schedule, then I will obviously expect my client to do it. So, it works both ways,” says Bhatia.
