‘DIDN’T LIKE ARIJIT’S VOICE FOR BAARISH, SO REPLACED HIM’

Big names and reputations don’t matter to composer Tanishk Bagchi, who doesn’t flinch before dropping them in his pursuit of the right voice

Music composer Tanishk Bagchi, who is still in the early stages of his career, has worked with some of the industry’s biggest names, including Arijit Singh and Sonu Nigam. However, a singer’s reputation never affects Bagchi, and he is not afraid of choosing an unknown singer over a popular name.

“I am very particular about voices, and I will not stop till I find a perfect voice for a song I have created. So, big names and reputations don’t bother me,” he states. “For instance, I had earlier recorded the song Baarish (Half Girlfriend, 2017) with Arijit (Singh). But I didn’t like his voice for that song, so I got Ash King to record it. The song became a chart-topping number,” says Tanishk.

The singer is riding high on the success of Dilbar, his latest song from the upcoming film Satyameva Jayate. A remake of the hit 90s track of the same name (from the 1999 film Sirf Tum) that featured Sushmita Sen, the new version has been sung by Neha Kakkar and Dhvani Bhanushali. He says he always expected the song to be a hit — the song has already crossed 129 million ever since its release earlier this month.

“Of course, the original song was a big hit, and people loved it, so I knew that this version, too, will be liked by the masses. But yes, the catch was to contemporise the song, which was tricky,” he shares.

The composer reveals that initially he worried that he was the only one “recreating” classics in the industry — his discography boasts several remakes including Tamma Tamma Again (Badrinath Ki Dulhania), The Humma Song (OK Jaanu), Tu Cheez Badi (Machine), Mere Rashke Qamar (Baadshaho, 2017) and Nit Khair Manga (Raid, 2018) —but he was wrong.

“I realised everyone is doing it, even those who say that they will never recreate music. Some of them have been really bad recreating. But I know that all my recreations have been loved so far by the masses,” says Tanishk.
