I never wanted overnight success, says Akshay

Actor Akshay Oberoi regrets missing out on opportunities by refusing certain offers. However, he says that taking risks, too, is important.

“I do, at times, think that I should not have let opportunities go. I feel at that time I was immature. As some of the films I said no to, did really well. But at the same time, I am happy with the work I have done so far. More so, when random people come up to me and say, ‘Oh, we really liked you in that film’ or ‘You also looked nice in that song’, etc.,” he says.

“Had I said yes to all those lost opportunities then life would have been a lot different with a bigger and fancier house, more money. But for me the integrity as an artist is essential. I never wanted overnight success. Look at Irrfan and how he has slowly carved his space and is now one of the celebrated actors here,” adds Akshay.

But, the actor says he is moving ahead slowly but that does not mean he is not ambitious. “I still try hard to get good films via auditions. I don’t belong to any famous family, and I have built a career on my own. And I can happily say that I have been running my house quite well. For me, looking back on my career should be [a] satisfying [memory]. I also don’t want to take a break from work,” he shares. “So, I have a few films and web series lined up,” adds the actor, known for films such as Pizza (2014), Laal Rang (2016), Gurgaon (2017) and Kaalakaandi.

About the last few films he has done, Akshay shares that films like Gurgaon and Kaalakandi worked well for his career. “The appreciation I received made me realise that if you try hard, you will get your due,” he says.
