Arole when played right, regardless of its length, makes audiences and critics alike take notice. That’s what has worked in actor Karishma Tanna’s case. It has been over a month since Sanju, the biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, released, and Karishma is still basking in the glory of the film’s success. She has a guest appearance in it, but her performance was appreciated.

For the actor, bagging the film, the cast of which includes stars such as Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal and Paresh Rawal, was itself an achievement. “Most of the actors in Sanju had a strong lineage. So for me, coming from nowhere, no background, it was a big deal when my name was being mentioned along with the stars. I’m very content in that way and I know slowly and gradually, I’ll make my mark in Bollywood,” says Karishma.

Elaborating on how the film has got her recognition, the actor adds, “There are people who are replying to me and sending me [congratulatory] messages; those who never had the time to meet, are now meeting me. That’s the power of a super hit film and a beautiful camp that I got to be a part of.”

Karishma can only hope that this success will open more doors for her. “I have always believed that if you do good work and if you are noted, people who don’t even message you or don’t even consider you in films, start considering you. That’s the bitter and the biggest fact of life. So, Sanju has gradually done that for me and I owe it all to this film. I have been offered a couple of films and right now, I’m reading the scripts,” she says.

the films that she has been offered is a “comedy, and another is a full-on powerpacked action drama”.

Is Karishma open to doing more special appearances or cameos in future projects? She doesn’t sound too keen. “The length of the role would now matter [to me] because people in this industry [tend to] typecast you. If you continue to do guest appearances, they’d be like, ‘Okay, she has done a cameo, so let’s offer her something similar’. Going forward, I’d love to do meaty roles for sure,” she signs off.
