Verses for change: Students do their bit for the cause of education
If we tell you that an initiative in town aims to raise funds to give underprivileged girls a chance at education, it might sound like the usual deal that many NGOs often come up with. Let us tell you how this one is different.
Brainchild of two twelfth standard students this fundraiser, A Song for a Voice, is a concept that is free of any typical organisational ties.
Kaavya Rajesh, who along with Mihir Kansal came up with this idea, shares, “Mihir and I just felt like doing something towards the education of underprivileged girls and thus came up with this concept. Both of us believe in bringing about a change in a manner where the donors are not oblivious of who they are contributing for. That’s why we tied up with Delhi University’s Janki Devi Memorial College, which runs a programme for the education of underprivileged girls. This way, each donor would know where their contributions are going.”
Being hosted at Saints and Sinners in Gurugram, the event will see performances — two bands, two duets and two solos by student groups. And the closing act will be by Lekka of the Stage Season Three fame.
Wondering how one can donate? The entry fee charged for the performance that will take place this Sunday (August 5) from 5pm to 8pm will go towards the education of the girls. Furthermore, interested donors can leave their email-id at the venue for personalised updates and more. “This is a completely student-run event to raise awareness and funds for gender equality and education. We’d be delighted to have people join us in contributing for this cause,” says Kaavya.
