‘Films are made for audiences, but you do want some profits, too’

His last film, Raid, was a big success at the box office, and director Raj Kumar admits that while he wants his films to connect with as many viewers as possible, he also believes in them making money.

“Of course, films are made for the audiences, and when you are conceptualising the film, no one thinks of the monetary side to them. Having said that, films are made with a budget, and if your film also makes money, you are happy because then your producer gets paid,” says the filmmaker.

The Jharkand-born filmmaker, who has also directed the acclaimed Aamir (2008) and No One Killed Jessica (2011), adds, “It’s not that simple to say that I do not think about box office collections or that I don’t care about it, or even vice-versa. As a filmmaker, you know your producer’s money is on the line… You want your films to make profit. Everyone associated with the films wants their movie to make money. No one will be happy if it doesn’t,” says Gupta, who is in talks with Ajay Devgn for another film.

“That’s why it’s a great feeling that the audiences loved the film and it also made money on the box-office. Obviously the two things are related, but still it is good to know that your film is doing well monetarily, apart from all the love from the audiences,” he adds.
