Always wanted to do a film about national pride, says Ranveer Singh

Ranveer Singh, who is all geared up to bring to celluloid, the story of India’s first cricket World Cup victory, with ’83, says that doing the film comes with a certain sense of responsibility.

“It is an important part of our sports history and our history as a nation, our first World Cup win that put us on top of the world,” says Ranveer, who, along with director Kabir Khan, visited the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London to watch the recentlyconcluded 2nd test of the ongoing India-England series.

“I always wanted to be part of a film where the takeaway would be that sense of national pride,” shares Ranveer, adding that he feels lucky to be fronting the film, which will trace the story of India’s 1983 World Cup victory — India’s first-ever major success in the sport under the leadership of iconic all-rounder Kapil Dev. “For me, to be playing Kapil Dev is a huge deal. He is a legend, and commands such respect in the cricket fraternity,” he adds.

The facts director Kabir Khan shared with him in the narration of the script, blew him away, shares Ranveer. “I had no idea this was how we won our first World Cup. They were a complete bunch of underdogs that nobody believed in and they fought and had the ultimate victory. It is a human story,” he says. PTI
