Life is happening — quite literally — for singer Gajendra Verma. His single, Tera Ghata, has received over 130 million views so far, reaffirming his faith in independent music.

“The best part is that people are listening to pop music, and [making it] as famous as Bollywood. People are not just relying on Bollywood to give them songs,” he gushes. The singer, who is know for his hit song in the movie Table No 21 (2013) says he was always inclined towards indie pop. “Beech beech mein Bollywood happened. Even Mann Mera was a single of mine that got picked up for a film (Table No 21),” Verma shares.

What are his thoughts on the trend of recreating hit singles for films, including songs such as High Rated Gabru and Ban Ja Rani being taken up for films? “It’s more like a business call, not a music call. So, if it’s a hit song, it gets picked up for a movie,” an amused Gajendra replies, quipping, “Maybe Tera Ghata will also get picked up for a movie… I don’t know!”

On a different note, love and heartbreak feature prominently as themes in his songs. He explains, “Love songs come naturally to me. But future plans are different.”

His single may have had many covers made by fans, but what does Gajendra have to say about suggestive videos? “I don’t really like to judge as everyone has a different take on things. People have expressed themselves in all kinds of ways and surprised me. We have double meaning songs in films as well,” he says.
