SOCIETY AUDITIONS ARE NO CHILD’S PLAY

Thought getting into Delhi University was hard work? These college society audition stories tell us that the challenges don’t end at admissions; there’s more if you want to get in ‘the soc of your dreams’

- Mahir Amir

The DU admission rush is over. And having got into their favourite college and found their dream course, fuchchas have set their sights on a higher goal — the much-hallowed and celebrated cultural and extracurricular societies of Delhi University. ’Tis the season of trials and auditions, and enamoured with the promise of a life beyond academics, aspirants are vying hard for a spot in their desired soc. But cracking trials ain’t cakewalk, says Ankit Gund, a fresh DU graduate from Hindu College.

“Yes, there are proper auditions for every soc. If you are going for dram soc (dramatic society), you’d be asked to do something to test your confidence, such as show how you poop when you are constipated or for the debating soc, they might ask you to talk about why oxygen is bad for human beings... random stuff but with a purpose to gauge your talent,” informs Gund.

Many freshers choose their colleges depending on their favourite soc. Shreya Rai, a first-year student of Miranda House, says, “I’ve always wanted dance to be a part of my life. So, I chose Miranda for their Indian Dance Soc, Mridang.”

WANT TO BE PART OF DRAM SOC? SELL CONDOMS

Auditions for the dram soc are no less dramatic than the ones for TV reality shows. They have a lot of talent rounds before the final ones are chosen. And some fucchas are no less dramatic either. For instance, this first-year student from St Stephen’s College insists that she be called Charlie’s Angel (she doesn’t want to give her real name lest the college authorities lash out at her). Giving us the low-down on what happened at the Hindi street play soc, Aadibhav, she says, “In one of the rounds we were asked to give a creative introduction.. the catch was, that we had to stand at a far corner of the lawn! They wanted to check our voice projection, confidence and creativity.” But that’s not all. “In another round, we were asked to be a lipstick, or a chappal,” informs this fuchcha, adding, “A certain kind of besharmi is needed for street plays team; so, the shortlisted ones were given different things to do. Like someone was asked to spread awareness about protected sex, basically endorse condoms. So, this person then sat like a baba and started saying things like, ‘Bachche waise hi shaitaan hote hain. Unhe paida kar ke duniya ki aabaadi kyun badhaani? Beta, always remember, suraksha hi hai savdhaani’. I guess, it helped the seniors gauge her creativity and confidence, and also helped spread awareness about a serious subject.”

There are proper auditions for every soc... with a purpose to gauge your talent. ANKIT GUND, DU STUDENT
