Hollywood actor Robert De Niro and Anupam Kher have shared a unique friendship ever since they worked together in Silver Linings Playbook (2012). So when De Niro celebrated his 75th birthday (August 17), Kher, who is currently in the USA for the schedule of his new show, New Amsterdam, went out of his way to celebrate it as well. According to a source at the party, Kher recited the Mahamrityunjay shloka for the legendary actor on his special day, and gifted him a Bhagavad Gita and a Ganesha statue.

“It was wonderful to be with Robert De Niro sir on his 75th landmark birthday. I had attended his 70th birthday as well. It’s been wonderful to know him for the past five years. Besides his birthday, I had my fan moment, as I got to meet Martin Scorsese (filmmaker) as well. I grew up watching him and his movies closely. It was wonderful to meet him and tell him how much people in India respect his work,” Kher says.

In March this year, De Niro had thrown a surprise bash on Kher’s 63rd birthday by hosting a private dinner at his residence. Talking about their friendship, Kher says, “He had wished me on my birthday, and I wanted to be part of his as well. It was a great honour and a very humbling experience to be present there on his landmark birthday He said that he is going to be around for another 50 years. May God give him more than that. While everybody was raising a toast, I recited the Mahamrityunjay shlok loudly for his long life. I a very important mantr which was my toasting to him.”

The source adds, “Interestingly, the actor also gifted a Bhagwad Gita and Ganesha statue to film-maker David O Russell on his birthday celebration on August 20.”
