STREET LIGHTS ADD REALNESS TO VARUN, ANUSHKA’S NEXT
Sharat Katariya, the film’s director, wanted to make the scenes look as authentic as possible
It goes without saying that Indian craftsmen – across length and breadth of the country – go out of their way to preserve India’s traditional art. In fact, Sharat Katariya’s next, Sui Dhaaga – Made in India, encompasses their trials and tribulations. And to make all of it look authentic, Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan as well as Sharat have put their best foot forward.
“While Anushka plays an embroiderer, Varun plays the role of a tailor from heartland India. And since they play innocent village folk — namely Mauji and Mamta — who dream to make a name for themselves, Sharat wanted to capture the small-town essence and so went all out to make the scenes look as authentic as possible. That’s why you will see makers using real street lights in Chanderi (Madhya Pradesh) to shoot a few sequences,” says an insider from the film’s unit.
Anushka says, “Craftsmen work day and night. So, Sharat wanted to show how a craftsman in such places (Chanderi) work through the night. That’s when we learnt that many such artisans use the bright street lights to aid their professional needs and we wanted to capture the same in our film.”
Varun, on his part, feels that Sharat has “got some very heartfelt moments while shooting these scenes (under street lights).” He says, “These talented artists generally go on the roof of their houses and start working at night. Mauji and Mamta’s character takes a leaf out of this dedication, ambition and entrepreneur spirit. We shot some amazing sewing and embroidering scenes using the street lights of Chanderi and they are really touching.”
