The year 2018 has proven to be a good one for actor Vicky Kaushal. With films such as Sanju, Raazi and the anthology Lust Stories, becoming hits, the actor is certainly walking on the right track. However, bring up the fact that Raazi and Lust Stories had Alia Bhatt and Kiara Advani with stronger roles and more screen time, and Vicky says that it is not a point of concern for him. “Sometimes, it’s better to look at the bigger picture. My journey started with a film like Masaan (2015), and with that film I got to learn that the most important thing about a film is its story. If people can take your story back home, they will notice you. What I learnt from my first film, is that a film can make a star out of an actor but not the other way around,” says the actor, whose lineup includes Uri and Takht.

Describing the factors which are important for him while selecting a film, he says, “Actors don’t make films, it’s a director’s medium. The first point of concern is that the screenplay needs to be good. Of course, it’s every actor’s dream that he or she be the protagonist of the film, so, that dream is always there and you always work towards it, but sometimes, you have to follow your heart,” he says.

Vicky has had the chance to work with stalwarts such as Rajkumar Hirani and Meghna Gulzar in Sanju and Raazi respectively. He is proud of the fact that they chose to work with him. “Sometimes, you come across films and stories that you are amazed by, and you just want to be a part of them. Especially, with directors such as Rajkumar Hirani and Meghna Gulzar approaching you for their project, you know that you are going to learn a lot,” he says.

However, the actor is careful about not getting trapped in monotonous roles. “If I keep repeating the kind of roles that I do, then there is a fear of getting stereotyped, and I have to be wary of that,” he says.
