‘SOME WILL MISUSE FREEDOM ON THE WEB’
Actor Richa Chadha weighs in on the pros and cons of the absence of censorship on the Internet
With the Internet churning out interesting content in form of short films and web series, it is gaining wider acceptance with the audience. While the absence of censorship on the web is an added benefit for content creators, actor Richa Chadha feels it can easily be misused.
“There will obviously be some people who will misuse the liberty on the net by throwing in a lot of unnecessary sex and glamour. There are pros and cons of freedom in the digital space,” says Richa, who has been part of the web series Inside Edge.
However, she emphasises that the freedom on the Internet treats the viewers in an empowered manner. “The freedom on the net is that you don’t have to show lovemaking scenes by two flowers rubbing each other,” she says, taking a dig at older films.
Giving example of her critically acclaimed film Masaan (2015), Richa highlights how censorship can sometimes take the audience away from reality. “In Masaan, during a particular scene, when the police office walks in and my character is having intercourse with her boyfriend, they asked us to
remove abuse. That is also kind of stupid. In real life, when a cop enters a room or such a situation, he will certainly abuse you,” she says.
The actor will soon be seen in Tabrez Noorani’s film Love Sonia, which also stars Hollywood actors Demi Moore and Freida Pinto. The film, which has won at several international film festivals has once again put Bollywood talent on global platform. However, Richa feels Bollywood has been global since a long time.
“Bollywood was always global. When we travel, we meet people from Iran, Kenya, Nepal, Turkey, and so many places where everyone is consuming content. Bollywood will continue to grow if we keep improving our quality,” she says.
