Cape-wearing days over for Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck?

- AGENCIES

As shocking rumours suggest, Henry Cavill might not remain a part of the DC cinematic universe as Superman. The actor, who first played the superhero in Man of Steel (2013), and later reprised that role in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), is parting ways with Warner Bros, reported The Hollywood Reporter, quoting unnamed sources.

According to the report, this comes after talks of Cavill’s cameo in the upcoming film Shazam! failed because of scheduling conflicts. Another source has been quoted as saying that Warner Bros is trying to hit a “reset” button with the DC universe. Talks are on to find a new face, and sources suggest that Michael B. Jordan of the boxing saga Creed (2015) is in talks to replace Cavill. “Superman is like James Bond — after a certain run, you have to look at new actors,” says a source.

Reports say that the decision solidified as Cavill signed on to star in the web series, The Witcher. Another insider says that the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, to be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. That effectively removes an actor of Cavill’s age from the storyline, as Kal-El (later Superman), would be an infant at the time.

Ben Affleck is also said to be losing his DC role as Batman, as a new, probably younger actor is expected to take on the mantle in Matt Reeves’ standalone film, set to roll in 2019.

Cavill responded to the reports using Instagram, posting a funny video with the caption: “Today was exciting #Superman.” In it, the actor, wearing a Krypton Lifting Team T-shirt, showcases a Superman figurine. Cavill’s manager Dany Garcia tweeted: “Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet...” Warner Bros said in a statement it shares a “great relationship” with Cavill. It said: “Additionally, we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”
