Dare to flare: This retro style is back!
It’s time to swap your skinnies for wide-legged trousers. And who better to rock the trend than Bollywood and Hollywood celebs? This Seventies style now comes in a variety of silhouettes — huge bellbottoms; straight wide legs; snug-fitting jeans flaring dramatically from the knees down, and more. Talking about the trend, designer Rina Dhaka says, “I’m a big advocate of flared pants. It’s the best trend for any Indian body that’s bigger at the derriere.” Designer Nachiket Barve also gives a thumbs up to the trend, saying, “Wide-legged or flared pants suit the Indian body type really well. And, if the trousers have the right flare or are cut well, then it’s flattering for most body types. One can wear them casually as well as for evening or festive looks. This time on the runway, I showcased a lot of wide-legged kalidaar pants with details, paired with jackets and crop tops, and also jumpsuits with wide legs.” Flea market fashionistas have it good. Sarojini Nagar has heaps of wide-legged bottoms from ₹350, thus marking the comeback of this retro style. As for how to wear it right, celebrity stylist Tanya Ghavri says, “Wide-legged trousers can mean various things — the palazzo style, cinched at the waist and flaring from the waist down; hipster pants; bell bottoms; figurehugging at the hips and thighs and wider below. All of these styles are super-comfortable and give a person so much leg length.” Pair the trousers with a cool shirt or tucked in T-shirt or a crop top. For a formal look, get a pretty bow-collar top — and voila, you’re done!
