Debina’s support let Gurmeet chase his filmi dreams

- Rishabh Suri

Actor Gurmeet Choudhary was a popular name on Indian television before he ventured into Bollywood. He debuted with Mahesh Bhatt’s Khamoshiyan (2015), and since then, he has not done any fiction show.

Has he left television fully for films? “You need threefour years to prepare for films. I can’t do a daily soap now, but yes, if there are some limited episode series, then why not? We have to understand that the TV audience is huge. This is why we have to go to TV shows to promote our films! It will be wrong of me to say that [I have left TV],” he says.

“TV is my godfather. It’s the medium which spread my name across households, and even got me into films. I can’t say I will forget TV; so I’ll aim to keep doing something for its audience,” adds Gurmeet, who had his wife, actor Debina Bonnerjee’s, support throughout.

“My lifestyle and Debina’s is very normal; we planned everything out, right down to how we will collect money and then I will focus on films fully. My supportive wife told me ‘You don’t need to worry about any problems at home. I’ll keep doing TV and earn money. Aap apna sapna poora karte raho’. We balance each other,” Gurmeet tells us.

Debina and Gurmeet played the roles of Lord Ram and Sita in the 2008 TV show Ramayan.

However, he adds that finances were better on TV, as he was an established name. “I was earning in crores on TV, and for my filmi dreams, I had to let go of many crores. I am a newcomer in films, so paise bhi itne nahi hai… kurbaani karni padhti hai. But I don’t regret it. I am getting to do so many good roles with good makers,” Gurmeet signs off.
