RED HOT FASHION

From Indianwear to Westernwear, headtotoe red looks are trending. Here’s how to ace the style

- Prerna Gauba

Red has always been an auspicious colour when it comes to Indian fashion and culture. Various hues of crimson have been a favourite of brides in India. Lately, the fashion world, too, has been inspired by all-red outfits to fire up the runway. Brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Marc, Gucci, Balenciaga, and Indian designers such as Nikhita Tandon, Siddartha Tytler, Namrata Joshipura, and Ridhi Mehra have come out with collections dominated by strong red looks.

Wondering why the colour is a hot favourite? Because it makes a woman look strong and confident. “There isn’t any specific reason behind choosing red; it’s just that it is a fierce colour and I connect it with everything attractive, desirable, and immensely hot. It’s rebellious, it’s fierce, and that’s what attracts me and many women,” says designer Nikhita Tandon.

The colour also peps up the festive season. “It’s a great colour to wear on festive occasions, and I feel red is the new black,” says designer Ridhi Mehra.

However, the colour can become overwhelming, so keeping the rest of the look minimal is crucial. “It’s definitely overwhelming for some, but women who don’t shy away from experimenting should check out all the reds. A simple formula to ace the look is to team it with nude makeup, simplest accessories and hairstyle,” suggests Tandon.

Adding contrast is also a good option. “I love tone on tone or contrasting it with white. Red could also go with light shades such as light pink, beige, etc.,” says Mehra. Agreeing to this, stylist Sahil Gulati says, “The colour works for all skin tones; however, styling it right is important. Apple or pear-shaped women should go for a monotone look with simple cuts. But if one is petite or has an hourglass figure, do experiment with exaggerated sleeves and hemlines.”

Red is rebellious, it’s fierce, and that’s what attracts me and many women.
