Guru Randhawa: I will never change as a musician

- Samarth Goyal

Singer-songwriter Guru Randhawa’s fanbase has grown manifold over the past few years. However, unlike other musicians, the 27-year-old says he will not “try to change” himself because of the growing number of listeners.

“I am still the same as I was when my first song released in 2012. I still work in the same studio with the same set of people. I am never going to change that, or anything else, just because the number of fans are growing,” says Guru.

The singer adds there were people who were his fans right from the first song. “So, if I do change now as there are some new fans, it won’t be justified, because they were my fans from the start and liked my music. Jo naye fans hain, woh bhi ek din purane ho jayenge, aur fir aur naye fans aa jayenge (The new fans will soon become old fans, and there will be new fans). So if you change, you don’t really get anything,” he explains.

His latest single Downtown crossed 46 million views on YouTube since it released on October 15. At the risk of sounding pompous, Guru admits he expected his song to do well.

“I always knew the song will do well. The reason is I have no pressure on me. The only time there was pressure was in 2012, when I was about to release my first single. Ever since, I’ve had no sort of pressure. I make music when I want. When that happens, you know its good music,” he adds.
