Nobody is being forced to watch cussing and nudity: Shweta Tripathi

Actor Shweta Tripathi, who shot to fame with Neeraj Ghaywan’s hard-hitting Masaan (2015), was recently seen in the gritty web series Mirzapur, alongside Ali Fazal and Rasika Dugal. She was earlier seen on the show The Trip, which released in 2016.

Having worked in the web space frequently, what does Shweta think about the frequent criticism that the medium attracts for language and nudity? “People who don’t want to listen to abuses, or see (nudity) will not watch it, we are not forcing anyone. Such decision-making power and acumen is there in everyone. We are acting by choice, not because hamari family mein tha ya humein opportunity diya gaya tha. We love playing different characters that’s why we are here,” she says.

Shweta, however, adds that some have taken advantage of the freedom on the medium. “Iska bahut logon ne faayda uthaya. They thought, ‘There’s no censorship, let’s put anything, kissing scenes, abuses...’ But we are not doing that. Nobody’s going to misuse it, I hope. Now is the time to support each other,” she says.

Shweta points out that it is problematic how viewers differentiate between characters cussing in English and those swearing in Hindi on screen. “The art and projects are bigger than all of us. Mirzapur mein gaaliyaan nahin dialogues they. We didn’t put abuses because ‘bolne mein maza aayega’. It’s how the characters speak. Raftaar, who did the rap for Manto (2018), said that ‘f**k bolna cool hai, lekin Hindi mein gaali doon toh sab dus baar dekhenge’! Children can sing songs like ‘Baby hit me’ and we do the same. Growth can’t happen with this limit,” she signs off.

The art and the projects are bigger than all of us. Mirzapur mein gaaliyaan nahin dialogues they. We didn’t put abuses because ‘bolne mein maza aayega’. It’s how the characters speak.
