Heart failure: The final frontier
The function of heart is to deliver oxygen and nutrient rich blood through its regular pumping action to the body cells. Heart failure means that the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should be. Normal functions of heart ranges from 55%to 70% and anything less than that is supposed to be decline in function or ‘heart failure’
Early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, appropriate treatment and compliance to medication can prevent heart failure. Early signs of heart failure are shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, swelling over feet, rapid or irregular heartbeat etc.
Initial management of heart failure is usually with medications and lifestyle modification which usually suffices but advance heart failure may require frequent hospital admissions and end stage heart failure requires ECMO (temporary artificial heart and lung support), LVAD (artificial heart), and last but not the least ‘Heart Transplant’.
At Asian Institute of Medical Sciences, we offer complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic services as well as run a comprehensive public awareness program regarding heart failure to educate, counsel and engage patients of heart failure.
