Putting your own life in danger to save someone’s else is no mean feat but this Delhi Police cop, subinspector Sunil, did so without a thought. While patrolling in Majnu Ka Tilla, he came to know of an old man who had slipped into the Yamuna and rushed to rescue him. “Due to heavy rains, the water level in the Yamuna was high and the flow was quite strong. I couldn’t see the person due to the water’s flow but I jumped in after tying myself with a long rope, whose end was held by another cop. I could not find the person but then I heard a garbled voice. I swam in the direction of the voice, got hold of his hand and took him out. Had we been a little late, the old man would have died,” says Sunil, adding, “The old man was taking a stroll in the area and had suddenly slipped into the river. He didn’t realise the strength of the current.”

While Sunil took adequate precautionary measures before saving the old man, wasn’t he apprehensive of jumping into the water when the river was in spate? “It’s my duty to save and help people. If I don’t do it, then who would? I only fulfilled my responsibility without giving a second thought,” adds the sub-inspector.

Sunil was felicitated for this act of bravery by the Commissioner of Delhi Police, Amulya Patnaik.

And there are many cops like Sunil who go beyond the call of duty to help citizens of the Capital. To appreciate their efforts, Delhi Police has added a new link on their website, called ‘Of them we are proud!’. Once you click on it, the link takes you to many more brave stories of cops. The move is aimed at spreading awareness about the force’s brave cops and their acts of compassion.
