REIMAGINING DESTINATION INDIA
The first edition of Hindustan Times Tourism Conclave opened to a warm reception as industry veterans and government representatives discussed growth strategies for Indian tourism
It is not for nothing that Indian tourism uses the word ‘Incredible’ in its tagline. ‘Atulya’, it reads in Hindi — unparalleled, unmatched.
From the snow-clad magnificence of the mountains to unique architecture of temples; the grandeur of forts and palaces to lush green escapes and scenic coastlines, India is a treasure trove for travellers. It is a one-stop destination offering myriad experiences to gourmands, adrenaline junkies, wildlife lovers and those seeking spiritual awakening. So it was only natural to present India as a promising travel destination at the recently concluded Hindustan Times Tourism Conclave held at Hyatt Regency in the Capital. In its inaugural season, the conclave saw the presence of distinguished personalities and industry experts from the realm of travel and tourism, ministries, film and journalism, who discussed various ideas and strategies to promote Indian tourism.
The event began with a welcome speech by R Sukumar, Editor-in-Chief, Hindustan Times, in which he emphasised on domestic tourism. This was followed by a keynote address by Prahad Singh Patel, Minister of State, ministry of culture and tourism, Government of India, who highlighted the ways in which the sector could get a boost. He was endearingly honest in his admission of the issues plaguing tourism in India. With this, he reinstated the fact that improvement begins with acknowledgement of the problems.
The order of the day followed a diverse range of discussions directly affecting travel and tourism in India, with panelists not only quoting facts and numbers, but taking various leaves out of their own personal experiences.
It culminated on a high note as panelists, participants and audience took back a piece of a reimagined India with them.
