Bombarded with offers, but I want to take it easy: Ayushmann

Ayushmann Khurrana is clearly on a roll — in life as well as at the box office. Last couple of years have been amazing for the actor with a string of hits such as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho (both 2018). This year too, Article 15 garnered applause and his latest release, Dream Girl continues to have a dream run (it crossed ₹100-crore mark yesterday).

All this only indicates at Ayushmann being one of the most in-demand actors, however, he’s clearly in no hurry. “As of now, I haven’t signed anything new. Yes, I’m bombarded with offers, but I want to take it easy. I’d really like to do something out-of-the box. Most of all, I’m looking to doing something different from the quirky genre,” says the actor, currently shooting for Shubh Mangal Zyaada Saavdhan (SMZS) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

“I’m going to be here till Diwali. I started working on SMZS as soon as we got done with Dream Girl’s release. Plus, I’ve already shot Gulabo Sitabo (it reunites him with his debut film, Vicky Donor director Shoojit Sircar). Both these films will be coming out next year,” says Ayushmann, who also has Amar Kaushik’s (of Stree fame) Bala releasing next.

Ask him if there’s a set formula behind these backto-back successes, the actor says it’s about “fearlessly following your heart”.

The actor explains, “I’m the same person [I was], but I feel after Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017), I had an absolute clarity in my head about how I need to go about choosing films. And that has helped me a lot. So, I’ve just stuck to the basics.”

The actor shares that he judges a project only on the basis of its material and content. “So, things like who is my director or costar in a film has never mattered to me. And I feel that thinking has put me on a solid ground as an actor. That’s what has really worked,” he sums up.
