‘Movies have impacted me and made me an actor’

Nushrat Bharucha is on cloud nine after the success of her latest film, Dream Girl. This is her second film, after Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018) that has collected over `100 crores at the box office. Speaking about the response Dream Girl has received, Nushrat says, “The response is extremely overwhelming and heartwarming to an extent that I’m really elated. We knew that the film was going to be a laugh riot the moment we heard the script, but the fact that people enjoyed it to such a great extent is absolutely amazing.”

This was the first time Nushrat was paired opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. About her experience working with him, she says, “It’s been nothing but amazing. He’s so funny, that instead of a shot of coffee every morning, I needed a shot of Ayushmann’s jokes.” Nushrat has surely come a long way since her debut in 2006. She has been a part of movies such as Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010), Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011) and Akaash Vani (2013).

Ask her what are the key elements she looks for in a script, and she says, “I’ve been an audience all my life. Movies have impacted me and made me an actor. The film needs to captivate me as an audience — either make me laugh, cry, think or keep me at the edge of the seat. The second important element is the director. When a director narrates something to me, I try to understand if our visions are alike. If we are in sync with what we are trying to create, then I know that’s the correct space to work.”

Nushrat has a bunch of films in the pipeline. She has Turram Khan directed by Hansal Mehta with Rajkummar Rao which is slated to release in January 2020. About her character in the film, Nushrat says, “It is a slice of life — simple yet impactful film. I’ve done something entirely different in it and enjoyed it a lot.” Besides Turram Khan, she also has Hurdang with Sunny Kaushal and Vijay Verma. “It goes back to the 90’s and is a love story amidst the Mandal Commission that came into effect back then. So, there’s a lot of agitation and conflict around us, and there’s a pure love story in the middle of that,” she concludes.
