Theatre needs relatable content, says Darsheel

- Sanskrita Bharadwaj

Actor Darsheel Safary became a household name with his Bollywood debut as Ishaan Nandkishore Awasthi — the dyslexic student — in Aamir Khan’s directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par (2007). And after a dream debut in films, the 22year-old is lately trying to find a foothold the theatres.

“There is no way to define acting, and that’s why it isn’t easy. There is no technique. It’s a learning process,” says the actor, who has been travelling to different places in India for his play, Two Adorable Losers. Darsheel plays the role of a psychology student who is weak in statistics. “To see people get attached to our play is so fulfilling. We’ve taken the play to Kerala and all the way to Assam as well,” he says.

The experience of travelling to different parts of India for with the theatre troupe has made Darsheel emotional. “I’m attached to everything that I do, and it has improved me as an actor,” he adds. Besides Two Adorable Losers, the actor is also part of another play called Kaise Karenge, by the same theatre company. According to him, it doesn’t matter whether if it is a film or a play as far as it’s a good script. “I just want to be part of a good story. My job is to make people believe in the roles I portray,” he says.

Darsheel wants more “relatable content” in theatres so that it can reach out to more people, especially the youth. “The best way to make it more accessible is by making “relatable content”.
