Tushar Hiranandani gave up job as a writer to direct his first film

- Shreya Mukherjee

Tushar Hiranandani yearned to become a director, and he made his start in Bollywood as a writer for Indra Kumar’s Masti (2004). He then went on to pen a number of films, but his directorial dreams kept haunting him till he saw the sharpshooters Chandro Tomar and Prakashi Tomar in a TV show hosted by Aamir Khan. That’s when he decided to make the film Saand Ki Aankh, to tell the tale of these two famous dadis.

“I had tears in my eyes when I watched them talking about their journey... And I started working on the story. I was working with Ekta (Kapoor; producer) then... I decided to take a break to work on the story and screenplay. For five years, I was sitting at home researching, writing and looking for a window to make the film a reality,” Tushar recalls.

During this phase, his wife, Nidhi Parmar, who is also one of the producers of the film, was a huge support system for him. “She told me to not think about anything else but the film... I must [also] mention Anurag (Kashyap; filmmaker). He would always tell me that I must direct a film and, once I do that, I must tell him. So I met him and discussed the script. He loved the idea so much that he agreed to back the film,” he adds.

Tushar is happy that people are saying nice things about the trailer and mentions how Ekta has also been very supportive. The day the promo released, she told him, “Maar diya tumne”.

After Saand Ki Aankh, Tushar has a few more ideas, but he is yet to decide on the story. “I’m one of those people who prefer taking time. Things done in a hurry aren’t always fruitful. I need another moving story to make my next film. I might do away with the ideas that I have right now if I get something more interesting. I can make a biopic, comedy, drama... anything,” he adds.
