‘Acting in films was a dream but I hadn’t planned it’
After playing lead roles in popular TV shows such as Fanaah, Razia Sultan, and Kya Qusoor Hai Amala Ka?, actor Pankhuri Awasthy is now gearing up for her film debut.
She will be seen alongside actor Ayushmann Khurrana in the romantic comedy drama, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (SMZS). Revolving around homosexuality, the film is a sequel to the 2017 hit Shubh Mangal Saavdhan.
Excited about her film, Pankhuri says, “SMZS deals with a socially-relevant subject and portrays a society in which the idea of homosexuality is not openly accepted. It has an awesome ensemble cast and is replete with humour and emotions. Depiction of the LGBTQ community in films has evolved over the years. It was terrible earlier, but of late, it is getting better. However, we still have a long way to go. I am glad that new filmmakers are changing things.”
More often than not, for most actors, after a long career on television, moving to films is naturally the next step. However, Pankhuri shares she never planned her move to films.
“Acting in a film was always a dream [but] I hadn’t planned it. I feel our journeys are destined, and you can manifest the things you want in your life. I think a lot of TV actors now are getting the opportunity to work in films. It isn’t about the role being substantial or not, but about the opportunity and the experience. As an actor, I want to try and be a part of as many mediums as I possibly can,” she concludes.
