The debate around actors working on the small screen being labelled TV actors has been on for a long time. While the slotting tendency irks some, Ravi Dubey says it’s like a boon for him. In fact, the Jamai Raja star feels proud of being called a TV actor.

“TV actor is the greatest label I’ve got, and I wear it like it’s a gifted medal on my chest. All these labels have only propelled me forward,” Ravi says.

The actor carved a niche for himself in the industry with popular TV shows such as Saas Bina Sasural and 12/24 Karol Bagh, and he feels grateful for having come this far. “I’m a bloody proud TV actor. It’s because of television that I’ve had a 15-year career, an audience of millions and have been able to create financial backing for the rest of my life,” the 35-year-old adds.

That said, Ravi agrees that TV actors do often face discrimination by comparison with film stars.

The actor asserts that no one should look down upon another just because they are from a different medium. “You call me a TV actor, that’s fine. But you call it with respect because I hold this medium very close to my heart. So, if a person — no matter how big he or she is — sitting across the table can’t respect me because I’m a TV actor, I’d rather not be at the table,” maintains the actor.

When it comes to being labelled, Ravi believes in embracing and reclaiming it. The actor explains his stance: “A label is a judgement. It’s a limitation of your mind that you’re putting on someone else. I accept it as an honour and embrace it. It’s this pride and the mutual nourishment you give the medium you belong to. If you nourish the medium, it will nourish you in return. People shun labels, I think people should embrace them, only then you can benefit from it,” the actor opines.
