‘When nothing comes your way, you have to make your own way’

I crave for characters that would get the best out of me. I can do without good vanity vans, preferences that an actor gets on the set. All I need is a good character.

KASHMERA SHAH ACTOR

Like any other actor, Kashmera Shah is keen to explore interesting parts on screen but rues that good offers aren’t coming her way of late. In fact, she feels that many in the industry believe her family is her priority now and therefore acting has taken a back seat.

“Family is priority, yes, but I’m not planning to sit at home idle,” says Kashmera, who was last seen on screen in the Hindi film City of Gold and Telugu project Agam Puram (both 2010). On the small screen, her last show was Siya Ke Ram, which went off air in 2016. Last year, however, she starred in Fourplay, for the web.

“Nothing substantial has been coming my way. I guess many are of the opinion that I’m busy with my family and don’t have time for anything else. That’s obviously not correct. But I’m not the one to sulk over the lack of opportunities. I’ve always believed when nothing comes your way, you have to make your own way. I know what I bring to the table... If I’m not getting work, then I’ll create my own work,” says Kashmera, who did exactly that by writing and directing an upcoming film, where she plays an important character.

Not a demanding actor, in her words, the only thing she is looking for is a well-etched character. “I don’t mind getting out of my comfort zone, but the character needs to be good. There’s no point putting your effort in something that isn’t worth. Something that I did in Jungle (2000)… I crave for such characters that would get the best out of me. I can do without good vanity vans and the preferences an actor gets on set, all I need is a good character,” adds the 47-yearold.

The mother of two-year-old twins Rayaan and Krishaang, Kashmera, who is married to actor and stand-up comedian Krushna Abhishek, shares now that her boys are growing up, she is ready to balance both work and home.

“Krushna and I divide our time and we have family and outside help also to take care of them. My kids are my world and I’m sure they would also not want me to do away with my passion for acting. If a woman wants, she can do anything and everything. I believe I too can,” she adds.
