After months of contemplation, Annup Sonii finally decided to take a concrete decision regarding his career. His longrunning crime drama, though a hit with the audience, made the actor feel the walls around him were caving in. “I’m really thankful to that show. But I didn’t know it would go on for seven years. I just went with the flow. When I quit the show, I realised I missed acting. The actor inside me was restless and greedy,” he says.

The National School of Drama graduate terms the process of performing on stage as ‘riyaaz’, for it allows the actor in him to improve. “Theatre polishes and enhances your craft. It helps you keep in touch with your craft and helps you experiment with it. When I decided I wanted to do a play, I was sure it should not be a runof-the-mill script. I did not want to accept scripts that had family dramas or tongue-incheek comedy,” he says about his play Ballygunge 1990, a murder mystery. The play is being staged in Delhi on December 15, at Kamani Auditorium, 7pm.

Ballygunge 1990, has been staged in major cities. “Since I have a strong foundation in theatre, it has always been part of my profession as an actor. I was busy with onscreen work, but at the same time I enjoyed theatre. For an actor, it is a great exercise,” says the actor seen in films like Gangaajal and Footpath (both 2003).
