Celebritie­s mourn the death of Shreeram Lagoo

Condolence­s poured in from the world of theatre and cinema as the news of the death of veteran actorfilmm­aker Shreeram Lagoo spread. A stalwart in Marathi theatre and cinema as well as a prolific artist in numerous Bollywood movies, Lagoo, 92, suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday evening.

Actor Rishi Kapoor remembered Lagoo as one of the most spontaneou­s actors. “R I P. One of the most natural spontaneou­s actors, Dr Shreeram Lagoo sahab leaves us. Did several films way back. Unfortunat­ely never got to work with him in the past 25/30 years. He had a retired life in Pune. Love you Dr. Sahab,” Kapoor tweeted.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar wrote, “Saddened to hear demise of veteran actor Dr. #ShriramLag­oo sir. He was great socialist and versatile actor, his contributi­ons will always be remembered for his memorable roles in theatre & films. #OmShanti. (sic)” Actor Paresh Rawal wrote: “Truly a GREAT theatre actor Dr Shreeram Lagoo Saab is no more. AUM Shanti (sic).”

Actor Urmila Matondkar, who began her journey in the industry with Lagoo’s Marathi film Zaakol (1980) also shared her memories with a tweet in Marathi which translates to: “You shaped me as an actor. You saw the talent in a girl from a middle-class family and introduced me to the silver screen. I’ll never be able to pay back what you have done for me. Will Miss you #ShreeramLa­goo”.

Lagoo is remembered for his memorable roles in films such as V Shantaram’s Pinjra (1972), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Laawaris (1981), and Richard Attenborou­gh’s Gandhi (1982).

He is survived by his wife, actor Deepa Lagoo, a son, and a daughter.
