‘CAN’T BE OBSESSED IF YOU WANT TO GET BETTER’

Actor Arjun Kapoor believes that it is necessary for one to enjoy the journey rather than ponder over the end result

Actors seldom pour their hearts out about their journeys, but Arjun Kapoor is not one to mince any words. Over the years, he has tried his hand at different genres — bromance-action in Gunday (2014), a satirical road comedy, Finding Fanny (2014) and even a period epic like Panipat (2019). And he is determined to continue doing so, even if the box office numbers weren’t encouraging for a few.

“I don’t think any actor has survived the film industry without a phase or two of things not clicking, being slightly disconnected from what the audience wants, or things not falling into place where you imagined. All you can do is keep at it,” says the 34-year old, who will next be seen alongside Rakul Preet Singh in a yet-untitled film.

An apt example of that, Arjun feels, is Ayushmann Khurrana. He elaborates, “From Hawaizaada (2015) and Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017) not doing well to suddenly having a string of unqualified successes.”

We mention that Ayushmann has almost carved out a genre for himself, doing quirky comedies that highlight the common man’s woes, it’s called ‘his zone’. Has Arjun found his zone yet?

“Maybe not yet,” he admits, but is quick to add, “I’m okay with that, because not everybody’s career will pan out at the same speed. If Tiger Shroff has a zone, that doesn’t mean we all find our zones the way he did. He’s amazing at what he does. Ayushmann found it after a few years. Similarly, Ranveer (Singh) found his zone after he met Mr. (Sanjay Leela) Bhansali. We have to enjoy the journey rather than always caring about the result.”

“As someone who wants to get better, you can’t be obsessed… you have to move ahead and believe in yourself, even when others don’t,” he concludes.
