Why should girls have all the fun

Ditching stereotypes with edgy and bold fashion choices, Bollywood men root for gender-neutral style

WITH FEMININE SILHOUETTES AND EDGY MAKEUP, FASHION WORLD HAS EMBRACED A GENDER FLUID STYLE

Pink, sequins, satin gloves, exaggerated jacket lapels and dramatically cut pantsuits — these aren’t pieces that one would associate with a Bollywood actor, but of late actors haven’t shied away from expressing their individuality through a gender fluid style. Be it Ranveer Singh in his pink pantsuit or Ayushmann Khurrana in a pair of sequinned pants, actors are rocking daring outfits with a charming confidence.

Stylist Isha Bhansali quips, “Bollywood men are breaking barriers of colours; no hue should be associated with one gender.”

And this change is not just in terms of apparels; men are also embracing makeup for magazine covers now. For instance, Jim Sarbh, who has always been appreciated for his bold fashion choice, recently shot with a fashion magazine in a refreshing yet edgy eye makeup look. Also jumping on the bandwagon is Aditya Roy Kapur, who pushed the envelope with his off-kilter makeup looks for a magazine shoot.

“It’s no longer black and white; grey spectrum is being talked about. Men are sporting makeup and more feminine silhouettes, and women are rocking masculine features like shoulder pads,” says stylist Akshay Tyagi.

Fashion is no longer onedimensional, and designers are exploring non binary designs in India and internationally. In the latest

Dior Fall ’20 collection, men walked down the runway with satin and velvet opera gloves, adorned with brooches. Labels like Gucci, Saint Laurent and back home, design houses like Arjun Saluja and Chola have redefined gender-fluid style in their offerings. Today it’s perfectly okay to borrow a kicky accessory from your grandmum’s closet. ”One should wear what appeals to one’s style sensibility,” says designer Dhruv Vaish. Anyone can sport any look but the key is to not be afraid, and take chances when it comes to colours, silhouette and pattern choices.
