Ageing on screen is not something that everyone is comfortable with, and female actors have, in particular, often expressed discomfort in playing the role of a mother on the small screen.

However, there are some actors like Akangsha Rawat, who have no qualms in portraying such roles on screen. Because, for her, everything depends on the offer and importance of her character in the plot.

“For me, it has always been what the story is all about and the journey of my character. Playing every role is a risk, because you need to make it convincing, or else the audience would reject it upfront,” says the actor, who portrays the role of a young mother in her ongoing television show.

However, if she was asked to play a mother to someone who is almost her age, that, she admits, would be a problem. But only on the small screen, and not on the web or in films, she’s quick to add.

Akangsha explains, “A TV show goes on for a long time and people get used to seeing you in a given role. So, it takes time to shed that image, although it is possible. But, the approach for web or films is different...the story is narrated within a given time frame, where the growth of the character is also represented in a certain way.”

The actor goes on to share that the main struggle is to be part of good shows. “It’s essential to have clarity regarding how the character would progress in the plot.”

“At times, it does not go as promised, which is very disappointing. So, I try and keep all these things in mind rather than the onscreen age of my character. I’m game for a well-written character. Then, the age won’t matter,” she signs off.

For me, it has always been what the story is all about and the journey of my character. Playing every role is a risk, because you need to make it convincing, or else the audience would reject it upfront.
