The spirit of Holi is contagious. And no matter how hard you try to save yourself from getting drenched in Holi colours, escaping the revelry is almost impossible! One way or the other, you end up coloured from head to toe. So, here are some tips to protect your hair and skin from the harmful chemicals used in colours, and make the festival of colours even more joyous:

BEFORE STEPPING OUT

■ To avoid irritation caused by synthetic colours, moisturise your skin with honey and shea butter body lotion.

■ To avoid getting colour soaked into your nails, apply a dark shade of nail paint and coat it with nail and cuticle conditioner.

■ Apply ample amount of sunscreen all over your body at least 15-20 minutes before going out to fight off the harsh sun rays and tanning.

■ A thick layer of passion flower cream on your body will later make it easier to wash the colour off.

■ Apply a good amount of foundation to protect your facial skin. The colours will go well along with the makeup, thereby, giving you all the more reason to show off your makeup skills.

■ Use almond oil as a full body cover to prevent the colour from penetrating deep into the skin.

■ Massage your hair with olive oil to protect them from drying out during Holi.

WHILE PLAYING HOLI

■ In the wake of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), avoid playing with water. Use herbal, homemade and natural colours, instead of prepackaged synthetic colours.

■ Keep sipping in water with a slice of lemon in it, as a dose of vitamin C is great for boosting your immunity.

■ Wash your hands more often than usual, and avoid touching your skin and hair.

REMOVING COLOURS

■ To remove the colour afterwards, use coconut oil. Massage it and then gently cleanse it with a cotton pad to remove colour without drying the skin.

■ After bathing, moisturise with almond lotion, cocoa butter or vanilla body cream.

■ Keep hair healthy, use a hair mask. Mix one teaspoon of glycerine, one teaspoon of vinegar, milk, shampoo and conditioner in a container to make a pack. Apply on your hair and leave it on for 5-10 minutes before rinsing off.

PROTECT YOUR BEARD

Men with full-grown beard are often not able to enjoy Holi, as they are busy protecting their beard from colours that can damage their scruff. Here are a few tips that can allow them to play Holi with full fervour:

■ Apply a copious amount of coconut oil on your hair and beard before heading out to play colours.

■ Before you step out for playing Holi, take a cold shower with soap that either has activated charcoal or essential oils.

BEARD CLEANSING

■ Wash your beard with lukewarm water as soon as you reach home, and use a beard shampoo.

■ In case the colours don’t go, you can rinse your beard with lemon juice. This will help weaken the colour molecules and make it easier to wash the colours off.

■ Use a moisturiser after washing your beard to recover from damage caused during Holi.
