Jodhpur tailor makes sure everyone’s ‘masked up’

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought daily life to a standstill. With imposition of lockdown and people living in self-isolation, there are some good Samaritans, who are working round the clock to give back to society at this hour of need. Jodhpur resident Devilal Jangid is one such person. A tailor by profession, the 55-year-old is making face masks and distributing them for free to the people in the area.

On the job for the last few days, he plans to continue making them, to provide it to those who aren’t able to get it on shops or online. “There are no masks available in our markets and those available, are very expensive. That is why I decided to do this. Sab kuch sanitise karke hi banaata hoon. These masks have two layers and are reusable,” says Jangid.

He makes about 100 to 150 masks everyday and is distributing them through his shop. Jangid also wants to make four-five layer masks, if he gets the supply of right materials.

“We need to help each other, stay together and fight this crisis,” he says, while adding that his family is ready to extend help in whatever way possible.

His son, Pukhraj Jangid had tweeted about the initiative that caught everyone’s attention and the tweet went

viral. The proud 28-year-old shares, “My father is at his job day and night. Since the shop is closed on Sunday, he works overtime on other days, so that he can distribute more masks on Saturday. Now that we have this lockdown, he has few of these ready at home and he is giving them out from here.”

However, the tailor is worried that since there is not much material left, he may not be able to carry on for long. “I had stocked up extra material, but that won’t last for long. If there is a way that I can get the supply, I can continue working. I just wish the situation becomes better soon,” he says.
