Keep the elderly safe, without going overboard
Health authorities across the world assert that the elderly are more susceptible to Covid-19 infection, owing to an ageing immune system and health concerns such as hypertension, diabetes, or lung problems. As they require greater precautions to stay safe, here are some points to ensure the same:
PRACTICE ‘SUMAN’ FOR AND HYGIENE
Proper hand hygiene helps in reducing the risk of contracting the virus The mnemonic SUMAN (Seedha, Ulta, Madhaml Angutha and nakhum) helps one remember the right way of washing hands.
SURFACE CLEANING IS KEY
The virus can enter your system through mouth, nose or eys, so one must wipe surfaces with a damp cloth Dusting or cleaning with compressed air should be avoided as this may make the virus sustain in the atmosphere for long. risking inhalation
STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE
ow an ex ise routine at ho ch as doing y ga, meditation or breathing exercises to stay calm and positive.
OPT FOR TELECONSULTATION
Avoid venturing out for routine check-ups and prefer tele-consultation. If the doctor advises any tests, visit labs with all the precautions or opt for home collection facilities.
DON’T GO OVERBOARD
You don’t need to wash vegetables in soap water. A simple rinse in running or warm water with baking soda is enough. There is not much risk with vegetables as they get cooked. But fruits should be washed thoroughly with baking soda and left to dry.
DON’T IGNORE MENTAL HEALTH
Avoid negative news on TV or social media. Also, social distancing doesn’t mean social isolation. The elderly should stay in touch with their loved ones, even if far, though video call tools.
AVOID OUTSIDE FOOD
Food may not be the risk, but the person delivering it may be an asymptomatic carrier. It’s best to eat home-cooked food which is nutritious. Green veggies and vitamin C-rich foods are recommended.
