GHEWAR SALES REMAIN DECENT AS DENIZENS CONTINUE TO SAVOUR THE TEEJ AND RAKSHA BANDHAN SPECIAL

Mention Teej, which is fast approaching on July 23, and ghewar instantly comes to the mind! And even amid the Covid-19 scare, the demand for its tempting variants — malai, mawa and plain ghewar — hasn’t slowed down at the eateries in Delhi-NCR.

“Jisko lena hain, woh le lete hain. Ab tyohaar hai to log ghewar khayenge hi... teej ya rakhi ghewar ke bina kahan manti hai,” says a salesperson at a Gurugram sweet shop.

Echoing similar views, Sanjay Aggarwal, from a Chandni Chowk-based sweet shop, says, “Jabse lockdown khula hai, orders kam ho gaye hain par ghewar log phir bhi khareed rahe hain. Farak itna hai ki ab log bada order nahi de rahe. They are buying smaller quantities.” A popular sweet shop in New Friends Colony is selling 40-50 pieces of ghewar everyday. “Jinko vishwas hai ki hum achchi cheez banate hain, woh lene aa rahe, ya ghar se order kar dete hain,” says Ramesh, who is helping at the shop.

And no wonder, Nupur Agarwal Kalra, a food and lifestyle blogger, couldn’t resist the seasonal delicacy either. She says, “That is the first time I bought food from outside in the last four months.”

Whereas Sakshi Jain, another Gurugrammer, confesses, “We were little apprehensive, so we sanitised the outer box and threw away the packing once we reached home.”

Kunal Balani, partner at a prominent sweet shop in Old Delhi, admits that the sales have been “decent”. “I am glad that people are still appreciating ghewar this year,” he says.
