Signal or Telegram over WhatsApp? Privacy policy prompts migration

- HT Tech

Ever since WhatsApp introduced its new privacy policy, the debate has been raging. The new policy states that all user data and chats will be shared with Facebook and other companies it owns and if the user does not accept the new policy, the messaging app will not be available to them after a particular date. Initially, this date was February 8 and has been now pushed back by three months to May 15. While the company says there has been a lot of misinformation causing concern, a lot many users are admittedly annoyed and choosing to migrate to other options like Signal and Telegram.

What’s working in favour of other message portals, Signal and Telegram, is that they prioritise data security and user privacy more than WhatsApp.

Left in a lurch, WhatsApp has been scrambling to make its case. The Facebook-owned messaging platform has released two statements and also a full-page ad in newspapers to explain that privacy is its top priority, is respected and still coded in their DNA. WhatsApp has also clarified that the changes in privacy policy apply only to the chats users have with businesses. That data and those chats will be shared with Facebook, the businesses, among others. However, users’ private chats are still private.

Given the fact that both Signal and Telegram have witnessed more than four million downloads since January 6, the day WhatsApp informed users of its new privacy policy, a massive migration seems to have already started.

The main idea behind different users picking another messaging app is data security and user privacy. And here you can find the platform-wise list of what all data is collected by which messaging app.
