Sony is trying to give its gaming console lineup a meaningful evolution with PlayStation 5. Priced ₹49,990, this computing machine is beastly with some top of the line specs under the hood and a polarising design. CPU, AMD carving a path for innovation and showing how games can still get more immersive. We played a few games on this new-age console for a week and while it checks lots of boxes, there are some obvious areas where the company could have done better.
PS5 is a big-sized machine. At 4.5kgs, you can feel the heft when you pick it up. Some may be concerned about the amount of dust it can collect over time, considering it has an exposed spine at the
DualSense controller with adaptive triggers bring more resistance and create various sensations to in-game action front, back and top. However, the space-age design compensates for it. The PS5 not just looks like a mini spaceship but is something that won’t go unnoticed in your room. It is not a natural progression from the PS4 series but a bold move can work in Sony’s favour. However, like what we said for the Xbox Series X, the design for the PS5 is also ‘love it or hate it’.
With a powerful AMD CPU,10.28 TFLOPs GPU, 16GB RAM and 667GB usable storage, the PS5 can push 4K games at 120Hz as smoothly as one can imagine. Loading times are fairly good and everything from gameplay quality to ray tracing in supported games, it all looks well implemented, especially if you have a 4K TV. A slight disappointment comes in the form of missing support for Dolby Atmos or Dolby Vision though. For those wondering about the low storage space, fortunately, you can add an external drive to expand it.
The PlayStation UI is cleaner this time around. If you are upgrading from PS4, it won’t be a learning curve as most elements are easy to understand. Certain changes will be visible right away such as long-pressing the PlayStation button on the DualSense controller brings the new Control Centre instead of the Quick menu, new PS5 Cards to track your activity, achievements in a game and even jump to specific parts of the game.
Adding to the experience is the improved DualSense controller with adaptive triggers that bring more resistance and create various sensations to in-game action. Holding it comfortably for hours is possible and the matte finish with textured triggers just add to the grip. There is a new mute button for the microphone, which we think was a much-needed addition.
If you want a taste of next-gen gaming console without missing out on your PS4 titles and higher frame rate support, the PS5 is the way to go.
The design might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it sure will make heads turn. There are minor drawbacks when compared with Xbox Series X but with better quality AAA titles and even better DualSense controller, the PS5 is an ideal package.
