Fashion is unpredictable, and seldom remains constant. However, some trends leave a profound impact, and one such trend is that of checkered prints. Be it gingham, plaid or houndstooth — checkered prints have a huge fan base. This classic style, which appeals to all, is one of the most embraced prints of all times, and its resourcefulness has made it eternal.
Over the years, there have been alterations in terms of size, colours and patterns, but the basic design remains unaltered.
“From being used as a style element in wide lapels, collar variations and unique bottoms to playing with contrasting colours in the same type of prints, the checkered print trend is fun, alongside being classic,” says designer Gautam Gupta. Once worn as classic checkerboard and buffalo check, the quirky approach of stylists and fashion enthusiasts has given a peculiar edge to this trend.
“Checkered prints will never go out of style. I feel it’s something that can be made with any colour combination and paired with any colour; even solid fabrics. Also, it’s gender fluid,” says designer Bhumika Ahluwalia, who also appreciates the versatility of this pattern.
Designer Anupamaa Dayal finds this style bold and alive. “They have an interesting heritage. Most cultures have some checkered avatar,” she observes. And designer Rina Dhaka loves how young people are giving a contemporary touch to this classic style. “Checkered print is like old wine in a new bottle. It is evolving since the late 80s and early 90s. To look chic and elegant, wear checkered print with dramatic sleeves,” she suggests.
This trend is picked up and experimented with by people, depending upon their preferences. While some like to keep it classic, others enjoy giving it a twist and adding liveliness by layering with solids or contrasting with vibrant hues.
One can channel their inner artist while styling checkered prints. This design looks flattering on almost all categories of clothing, including tops, shrugs, pantsuits, coats etc. You may, for instance, take inspiration from actor Kirti Kulhari’s elegant grey ensemble that has a standing neckline, or re-create vintage vibes with a blue sleeveless checkered print cardigan like Khushi Kapoor. The colour variations are abundant, and so are the styling options.
As much as the classic black and white checkerboard print is loved, funky colours have a unique fan base as well. This pattern has managed to cement its place in the fashion world, and remains one of the most popular choices.
