Have you noticed the recent splash of colours on a wall at Minto Bridge road in the Capital? Well, during the pandemic, street art at many places in the city highlighted the courage of Covid-19 warriors, but the new addition, by four artists from Delhi, features images of iconic structures such as Lotus Temple and Taj Mahal!

The dilapidated walls turned canvas over seven days as part of Street Art Fiesta by Austrian Cultural Forum New Delhi, as a contribution to the ongoing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The mural was painted by four artists, including two students of Jamia Millia Islamia. Ranjit Singh, one of the artists, says, “The mural draws attention to the concept of unity in diversity while highlighting the friendly association between India and Austria... During the pandemic, there was no commercial work for us artists. So I’m extremely elated to have been asked to undertake this project, where we were allowed to bring our own imagination to life.”

“It was tough, but a very refreshing and interesting experience as we got the opportunity to work at a public place after almost a year,” says Jyoti Sharma, a student of Bachelor in Fine Arts at Jamia.

Another arts student, Rajni Kumari, who worked on this street art, adds, “We took a week to prepare the layout, find a wall, and then another week to bring it to life.

There are many walls across the city which are in bad shape, and such initiatives allow us to express our creativity while adding to the beauty of that area. Our aim was to turn the wall into a selfie spot for Delhiites, who can also learn about the friendship between the two nations. We’ll paint more walls in the city in the coming weeks.”
