If you think size alone matters in the ring, Óscar Gutiérrez’s 5’6 frame and high-flying moves will make you think again! The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) legend, who is the Smackdown Tag Team Champion with his son, Dominik, is lethal in the ring as Rey Mysterio, but when the mask comes off, he is an unbelievably calm being.

“Oscar is a private person; I like to spend time with my wife, kids. When I put on the mask, I become this completely other person,” says the American wrestler, who entered the ring as an eight-year-old, inspired by his uncle, Rey Misterio Sr, credited for Mysterio’s high flying lucha libre style. “I’d help him pack his bags, play with his masks,” he recalls.

Mysterio, who was with WWE RAW when the pandemic hit, can’t wait to travel again for matches. “I was probably one of the first to perform, with Edge. There were no fans, not even virtual ones,” rues the three-time world champion, who enthralled Indian viewers in the first WWE Superstar Spectacle, in January, on Sony Sports.

His adoration for his Indian counterparts is in the same measure as his memories of the bout with The Great Khali. “I’d never stepped in the ring with a man of his stature. To see his size, power and everything he did. It is unbelievable,” says Mysterio, who holds his Indian fans close to his heart. “I truly hope one day, not too far from now, I can perform live here,” he adds.

The pandemic brought masks to the forefront, but Mysterio is synonymous with those of a different kind: “My uncle was a mask wrestler, that makes it special to us… To be able to step in the ring and have fans know not me, but the character. Now, wearing a mask symbolises what I represent — my people, my sport.”

Mysterio and Dominik are the first father-son duo to hold tag team titles in WWE. But, the legend says it’ll be a while before he passes on his mask and mantle to his son, for good. “I am enjoying sharing the ring with him; his focus inspires me. The Mysterio legacy could not be in better hands,” he signs off.
